World Music NL!

Wereld Music NL! is a series of broadcasts about the range of music genres made in the Netherlands that are counted among the broad spectrum of world music.
Since the 1980s, world music is a collective term for folk music (or traditional music), non-western classical music, non-western pop music and hybrids of these genres.
A number of unique collections have been made in the Netherlands of recordings of non-western and multicultural music. Part of these recordings belongs to colonial heritage and was made by administrative officers, missionaries and scientists. Recordings are also saved from the post-colonial era, which can sometimes be the only sounding source material for a number of historical music styles. They can be found in collections of various semi-public organizations and collections of associations and private enterprises.
In the nineties, most groups started making their own CDs. Some compilation CDs exist that were not made for trade. As played in previous broadcasts, the double CD World Music in the Netherlands (Stoa/Wereldomroep 1995) and the De Mix CD (IKON/KRO1995) and in this episode music by the Holland Rocks CD, a compilation CD by the Nationaal Pop Instituut from 1991.
In 1995, IKON/KRO broadcast TV programme de Mix, a four-part series about the influence of world music on Dutch pop culture, with a focus on music from Africa, Suriname, the Mediterranean Basin, and music from Asia.
The performances were recorded at Akhnaton in Amsterdam. The music has also been put on CD (De Mix IKON/KRO 1995, no handsuitgave).
In this episode music from the Mediterranean Basin, as performed by the Railand and Dilan groups, followed by music from Asia performed by the Moluccan Moods Orchestra and Indian Eagles group.
The Nationaal Pop Instituut (NPI) was an organization that was devoted to the development and quality of Dutch pop music. That meant all kinds of pop music: from pop and rock to hiphop, urban, dance, crossover and world music. It was founded in 1975 as Stichting Popmuziek Nederland and since 1977 it was subsidized by the national government. The organization was located at the Prins Hendrik wharf in Amsterdam, where before Fantasio and new-age-centre Kosmos were located. In 1997, the name changed into Nationaal Pop Instituut. On 1 January 2008, the NPI became a part of Muziek Centrum Nederland (MCN). When the MCN was discontinued, the NPI handed over a large part of its extensive archives to the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid. The Muziekencyclopedie (music encyclopedia) is currently also continued at Beeld en Geluid.
Over the years, the NPI has released a number of compilation albums with pop music and world music made in the Netherlands.
