The String Quartet

sun 19 may 2024 12:00 hour

We conclude our overview of Alfred Hill’s quartet music with the final two movements of his Fourteenth Quartet. Additionally, we will focus on a slightly younger contemporary of his, Margaret Sutherland, featuring two of her three string quartets.

Margaret Sutherland was accepted as a sixteen-year-old piano student at the Melbourne Conservatorium and spent much of her life working in this same city. Her String Quartet no. 1 dates back to 1937. After her divorce in 1948, Sutherland quickly became a prominent voice in Australian music, even though her music remained more conservative and melodious rather than modern.
