The Night: Jazz

tue 13 jul 2021 01:00 hour

A whole night of jazz. This episode features new releases by Joe Henderson, Phillipe Lemm Trio and Miguel Zenon, among others.

The Night: Jazz = jazz from Jordy de Muijnk’s collection.

As a tenor saxophonist, Joe Henderson honours Strayhorn on an album for which he would later receive his first Grammy. Also playing are Wynton Marsalis (trumpet), Stephen Scott (piano), Christian McBride (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums). A treat for the ears and a worthy opening to this night.

We continue this night with Larry Fuller and the 2019 album Overjoyed. Fuller is a gifted pianist who learned his trade the good old way: on stage. With his impressive talent, he attracted the attention of the likes of Ray Brown, Ernestine Anderson, Jeff Hamilton and John Pizzarelli.

The next album you can listen to is by Marlene Rosenburg and is titled MLK Convergence. MLK in this case stands for Martin Luther King but also for Marlene Rosenburg, Kenny Barron and Lewis Nash.

We continue with Miguel Zenon and the album Sonero: The Music of Ismael Rivera.

The album is a tribute to the Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Ismael “Maelo” Rivera, also known as El Sonero Mayor, which means the greatest singer/improviser. He lived from 1931 to 1987 and gained fame mainly thanks to the innovation he brought to the “sonero”, improvisational singing within the salsa tradition.

Something completely different from the previous CDs but certainly not less is this release by Echoes of Zoo. It is filled with active music to inject some energy into the night. As the band members say: the shutters of the hovels are opened and they never close again. A trip of some sorts into Concertzender’s The Night: Jazz brought to you by Falk Schrauwen (drums), Lieven van Pée (bass), Bart Vervaeck (electric guitar) and Nathan Daems (tenor saxophone).

For the last full album of the Night, we return to home soil with the Phillipe Lemm Trio. They recently released their third album First Steps. Phillipe Lemm goes back to his first steps in life.

We take our last steps in this jazz night with Concertzender with a number of works by Stanley Turrentine. On the album The Essential Stanley Turrentine we hear works from the years he was active for the CTI label.
