Music by 20th-century composers.
Conlon Nancarrow 2
Today, you can listen to the second of a diptych about the American composer Conlon Nancarrow, who lived from 1912 to 1997. For a long time, he was considered an eccentric, but is now considered one of the most original composers of the 20th century. György Ligeti once described him as “The greatest discovery since Webern and Ives … the best of any composer living today.
Nancarrow’s ‘claim to fame’ are his total of 49 Studies for Player Piano written between 1948 and 1992. You will hear some examples of these in this broadcast. His first string quartet and two Pieces for Small Orchestra will also be heard.
