Roots and leaves, Russian Style
Vershki da Koreshki may have had a Russian name (and several bandmembers from the Russian Federation), but they used Amsterdam as their home base. That’s because founder Aleksey Levin and singer Mola Sylla live there. The third full-time bandmember was double bassist Vladimir Volkov from St. Petersburg. The other members of the band were often replaced. These are some of those members: singer and reed player Sergey Starostin, tabla player Sandip Battacharya, and throat singer Kaigal-ool Khovalyg. In this episode, we’ll listen to their self-titled debut album from 1996 and their fourth and final album Samm from 2008.
