Special crossover music, chosen by Ton Maas. Arthur Russell and Gino Soccio – pioneers of ‘art-house’ disco.
Serious music lovers tend to sniff at something as banal as disco music. But this attitude isn’t justified in all cases. Arthur Russell, artistic director of The Kitchen, New York’s most important podium for new music, programmed his ‘orchestra disco’ there during the mid-seventies. Together with his on and off group Dinosaur L he then proceeded to record an album of this music . During the same period Canadian Gino Soccio made two albums that belong to the canon of artistic disco.
