A musical serial. Episode 37: Matins for Ockeghem (2)
The second part of Matins for the dead, in honour of Johannes Ockeghem, who passed away 520 years ago on february 6th.
This episode starts polyphonically, with Ockeghem’s heavy motet Intemerata Dei Mater, a piece with two basses.
The we descend into the quiet of plainchant, the Matins for the Dead, as performed by Scola Sanctorum Amsterdam in 1996, a recording from the rich archives of Concertzender’s own recordings.
We close with Nymphes des Bois, a well known and wonderful song of mourning. Josquin des Prez, who admired Ockeghem greatly, wrote this to commemorate his death.
