In this program, we hear music for the Easter season from the 16th century, with the main focus being on Jacob Regnart’s ‘Missa Christ ist erstanden’.
In the first section, we hear music from composers who had joined the Reformation. Conrad Rein was from Arnstadt and worked at the court in Copenhagen. Johannes Alectorius worked closely with Georg Rhau, cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Lucas Lossius was primarily a theorist but had a significant influence on the development of Lutheran church music by adapting Gregorian chants to the requirements of the Lutheran liturgy.
In the second section, we hear music by Hans Buchner, an organist in Konstanz, until the city converted to the Reformation. Then, we hear three alternatim compositions: the verses are sung in alternation with organ playing.
The last work was created in Innsbruck, where Jacob Regnart was in the service of Archduke Ferdinand II. He based two masses on old spiritual songs in German text from a collection published in Innsbruck in 1588. We hear one of these on the melody of ‘Christ ist erstanden’.
