Music from the 17th and 18th century. The oratorio ‘Assalonne punito’ by Pietro Andrea Ziani.
In this hour, we’ll hear one big piece: ‘Assalonne punito’, it’s an oratorio in two parts composed by the 17th-century composer Pietro Andrea Ziani.
It tells the story of King David and his son Absalom, who rises against his father. Its history is told in book two of the Old Testament, Samuel.
Ziani was born in Venice and worked in the San Marco for a while. In Venice, some of his operas were performed. After that, he worked in Bergamo, Innsbruck, Vienna and Dresden and he eventually settled in Naples, where he was appointed in one of the conservatories.
