Tomoko Sauvage.
Over the past decade, Tomoko Sauvage (JP/FR) has been working on “natural synthesizer” of her invention – waterbowls – combining water, ceramics and hydrophones (underwater microphones). Porcelain bowls, water drops, waves and bubbles as well as hydrophonic feedback and electronics are the main ingredients of her instrument that generates the sculptural and fluid timbre. Her musical experimentation is grounded on a live-performance-based practice that investigates the improvisation and interaction with the environment – the acoustic space and medium affected by architecture, temperature, humidity and human presence. Through primordial elements augmented by technology, enlivened by ritualistic yet playful gestures, Sauvage’s work contemplates, tunes and connects both the material and the immaterial in keeping a fragile balance between hazard and mastery.

Hanne Lippard.
Hanne Lippard has been using her voice as primary material for her sound installations and live performances since 2010. She appropriates and reenacts situations taken from the public sphere to interrogate a large range of subjects, including body politics, identity, standardization, and art ontologies. Her practice proposes a unique view on the media soundscape that surrounds us—one that prods us to listen more carefully.

Aki Onda & Nao Nishihara.
Onda and Nishihara depart from any tactical or directive method, instead favoring the open-ended and nonhierarchical exploration of their specific sculptural arrangement. This approach, highly cultivated in strands of each of the artists’ respective practices, frees sound from its usual striated contexts while also emphasizing specific sonic and physical relationships through distinct visual and technical cues. Both Onda’s various found objects, as well as Nishihara’s “musician machines” (such as a kick drum triggered by a rope attached to his toe) behave as individual characters, performers, and sonic sources throughout these five recordings.

Mark Harwood.
Mark Harwood (b. Melbourne) is a London based performer and recording artist working with a variety of sonic and performative elements. Under the guise of Astor he deploys a wide variety of techniques including field recording, musique concrete and electronics resulting in works that are developed as a means of bypassing the cliches imbedded within these disparate worlds in order to coerce a sound world which is simultaneously contemporary, foreign and engaging. Astor takes a magnifying glass to reality and unfurls it into uncanny audio essays. . His live performances encompass a variety of procedures incorporating the immediate surrounds where improvised actions yield spontaneous results leaving both performer and audience in unexpected predicaments, a state of mild hypnosis and potentially even laughter.

Leo Dolgan & Aaron Cupples.
Island of the Hungry Ghosts is a hybrid documentary that moves between the natural, human and spiritual worlds. Located off the coast of Indonesia, the Australian territory of Christmas Island is inhabited by migratory crabs travelling in their millions from the jungle towards the ocean, in a movement that has been provoked by the full moon for hundreds of thousands of years. Poh Lin Lee is a trauma therapist who lives with her family in this seemingly idyllic paradise. Every day, she talks with the asylum seekers held indefinitely in a high-security detention centre hidden in the island’s core, attempting to support them in a situation that is as unbearable as its outcome is uncertain. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island’s beautiful yet threatening landscape, the local islanders carry out their “hungry ghost” rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls who are said to be wandering the jungles at night looking for home.
