In this episode of Black and White Radio, Lighting designer Nico de Rooij is having a conversation with composer Sasha Kaoru Zamler-Carhart, a teach in on listening to compositional perspectives while being in the darkness, and finding comfort in it.
Sasha Kaoru Zamler-Carhart (they/them) is a singer, writer, medievalist, and composer/designer. Their artistic practice is reversible like an air conditioner. Sometimes it’s forensic and pointed at dissecting an existing object: this is their work as a medievalist. Sometimes it is toggled to output and makes a new design object: this is their work as a composer, designer, writer, and formerly a tax lawyer. Sasha has taught speculative design and music history at The New School in New York, and medieval music and Latin at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Their book “The Goths & Other Stories” is published by Punctum Books. Several composers have written operas and song cycles for their voice, most recently Jason Cady, Andrew Noseworthy, Samn Johnson, and Kyle Tieman-Strauss. Sasha is the vocalist of the improv band Zamler-Carhart Rauh Greenberg, whose latest album “Mots Ricos” just came out with CCR/Naxos. Sasha was the director of the medieval music ensemble The Ascoli Ensemble, with which they recorded two albums of 14th and 15th-century music. They hold a JD law degree, an MA in linguistics, and a BA in linguistics and philosophy from Stanford University. They also hold composition degrees from University of London (Royal Holloway) and the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague.
