This time, an hour of Radio Romantica is an hour of Danish music—a symphony by Hamerik and the spectacular Aladdin Suite by Nielsen.
Hamerik (pictured) wrote his 5th symphony, his so-called “Serious Symphony,” in the US. He was a celebrated composer and conductor in Baltimore, where he stayed by invitation, having made much of a name for himself in his own country.
We fill the hour with several movements, from Nielsen’s impressive stage music to Aladdin by Danish writer Oehlenschlaeger. Oriental sounds that seem a bit outrageous now but were perfectly fine a hundred years ago.
