Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
In 2014 Amsterdam Sinfonietta toured twelve European cities together with American baritone Thomas Hampson for the programme Tides of Life. Composer David Matthews was asked to produce the arrangements for string orchestra for this brilliant idea. In Ständchen he also added a female choir.
You will alternately be listening to well-known and lesser-known songs by Schubert and Wolf. In between, you will be listening to the Italian Serenade by Wolf in an arrangement by Bob Zimmerman. Brahms’ Vier ernste Gesänge are certainly the highlight of this hour of music, however, Samuel Barber’s equally serious and sombre Dover Beach forms the grand finale.
