A full hour of orchestral works by Anatol Liadov in Radio Romantica. Delightful music in the finest tradition of the Russian school of romanticism.
Like many composers of his generation (1855-1914), he was a student of Professor Rimsky-Korsakov at the Moscow Conservatory. Liadov wrote relatively few works, but his picturesque orchestral pieces are of exceptional quality. His instrumentations are fabulous.
You may know Enchanted Lake, whereas Baba Yaga and Kikimora, two portraits of supernatural female creatures, will probably be new to you. Liadov may not have composed much, but he was also a celebrated teacher in his day, and his pupil Stravinsky called him “a lovely man”.
