Episode VI: Reinbert breaks through!
Thea Derks follows the music trail of Reinbert de Leeuw on the basis of her biography Reinbert de Leeuw, mens of melodie (Reinbert de Leeuw, human of melody) which was published in 2014.
In 1964 De Leeuw finished the Amsterdam School of the Arts and was appointed as music editor of ‘De Gids’ by Harry Mulish a year later. In 1966 he played a piano recital in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The series was set up by Daniel Ruyneman and was continued by his widow and composer Rob du Bois after his death.
In his recital Reinbert de Leeuw presents music by the avant-garde of end nineteenth, early twentieth century before the break. After the break works by the contemporaty avant-garde. The concert was well received and meant his definite break through as a piano player. Music includes Ruyneman, Du Bois, Skrjabin, Stockhausen and De Leeuw himself.
