Opera in the 20th century

The history of twentieth century opera. 1986A

1986: While Spain and Portugal join the European Union, Aruba separates from the rest of the Antilles and the first non-smoking flight takes off in Sweden, classical music is at speed. There are many new productions, partly inspired by the urge to modernise (which started in the 60s) but there are also productions which seem to come from nowhere, not bothered by any tradition whatsoever. Also, the occasional works along the lines of traditional opera. So, a varied programme today.

In this episode fragments of:

  • The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat- Michael Nyman
  • The Mask of Orpheus- Harrison Birtwistle (picture)
  • Weiße Rose- Udo Zimmermann

Other opera and operetta productions from 1986:
