Opera in the 20th century

The history of twentieth century opera. 1978A.

1978: while Boney M (with the ‘Rivers of Babylon’) and Blondie (with ‘Denis’) are ruling the charts, things are rather quiet in the land of opera. Some beautiful things are being made, but only in small numbers. This might be the effect of the global oil crisis that was raging at that time. Nonetheless, there were some lovely premieres and a lot of diversity. Let’s have a look and especially, listen.

In this episode excerpts of:

  • György Ligeti- Le Grand Macabre
  • Aribert Reimann- Lear
  • Witold Lutoslawski- Les espaces du sommeil

Other opera and operetta productions from 1978:

  • Henri Sauguet- Boule de suif
  • Yulius Meitus- Мар’яна Пінеда
  • Jack Beeson-  Doctor Heidegger’s Fountain of Youth
  • Krzysztof Penderecki- Paradise lost
  • Aulis Sallinen- The Red Line (Punainen viiva)
  • Jorma Panula- Jaakko Ilkka
  • Ned Rorem- Miss Julie
  • Lorenzo Ferrero- Rimbaud, ou Le Fils du soleil
