In this series we explore the evolution of the art of opera from 1900 to today. In this episode, the highlights of 1911. And was a year it was!
Splendid operas premiered that year, like;’Der Rosenkavalier’ by Strauss, ‘L’heure espagnole’ by Ravel and ‘Duke Bluebeard’s Castle’ by Bartók. But other marvelous, more low-key operas appeared, like the first ‘real’ opera by Profofiev, who in 1911 was still a student at the conservatoire of St. Petersburg. Saint-Saëns delivered a laudable farewell to opera with his ‘Déjanire’.
