Reed player Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008) became known for his ‘Four Brothers’ composition for Woody Herman’s band. After that he developed himself as a prominent modernist. His trios with guitar player Jim Hall or pianist Paul Bley were well received. Around 1965 he began to focus also on more free improvisations, which are discussed in this programme.
