Marc van Vugt studied composition and electric guitar at the Utrechts Conservatorium. As a guitarist and composer, he works with smaller line-ups, surprising crossover projects, and large ensembles such as the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Metropole Orchestra.
His compositions feature references to styles such as Brazilian choro, jazz music, and contemporary composed music. A common thread in his work involves collaboration with singer/pianist Ineke Vandoorn.
Marc released 12 CDs with, among others, the group ‘Vandoorn’ and his jazz chamber orchestra ‘Big Bizar Habit’. He toured Canada, Japan, and Indonesia, among others, and played at major jazz festivals and clubs. He has worked with Kenny Wheeler, Vince Mendoza, Jasper van ‘t Hof, Paul van Kemenade and Eric Vloeimans. For his compositions, Marc received the Nexus Guitar Composition Award in 2003, an Honorable Mention from the Julius Hemphill Jazz Composition Awards in 2002, and the Centraal Beheer Kunstpromotie Award in 1986. Marc has taught composition and guitar at the HKU, the Conservatory of Groningen and Artez. He recently released his solo acoustic guitar album, The Lonely Coyote.
