Afro-beat with Fela Anikulapo Kuti

This month, it is 14 years since Fela Anikulapo Kuti, controversial founder of Afro-beat, passed away.
A visit to the United States in the sixties was what introduced Fela to funk and jazz. His recordings were often marathon jams, based on an indestructible groove that Fela sang and gave solo performances on his saxophone to.
His critical lyrics and charismatic personality made him into a target of the Nigerian leaders. Fela said the Black Panthers had a prominent influence on his work and both African and Western styles formed sources of inspiration for his music.
He took an active part in politics and strived for democracy and equality for all African people, by means of music and political actions. His impact in the world of music was just as large as his political influence.
