Soundtracks from films all over the world. (Bab’Aziz, Tunisia 2005)
The film ‘Bab’Aziz, the Prince who contemplated his soul’ of 2005 is a desert tale by the Tunisian film maker Nacer Khemir.
Bab’Aziz is a blind dervish who together with his granddaughter Ishtar is looking for the dancing dervishes who come together once every thirty years somewhere in the Sahara. Nobody knows exactly where this secret meeting place is. Only those who have true faith and who can listen with their hearts to the immense silence of the desert will find the place effortlessly.
The story ends well for Bab’Aziz and Ishtar because the desert is favourably disposed towards the dervishes and in the end reveals the secret of the meeting place. Here, old Bab’Aziz says goodbye to his granddaughter and entrusts her to Zaid, one of the people they met on the road. Together, they’re present at the sparkling and hypnotising spectacle of the dancing dervishes.. For Bab’Aziz the time has come to become one with the sand and become part of the many stories and legends.
With his film Bab’Aziz, Nacer Khemir wanted to show an open, tolerant and friendly Islamic culture. According to him, the fundamentalism and radicalism damage the islam’s image while the islamic culture is full of love and wisdom.
