Dutch Jazz on CD, compiled by Jan Verwey.
Theme: pianists, part 2.
Already at an early age, Rembrandt Frerichs went to New York to study and later also give concerts (Birdland etc).
Tonight’s CD is filled with his own compositions, played with his own trio.
He has given many concerts in Europe and the Middle East. Frerichs is an all-round musician.
Dirk Balthaus has his own studio in Amsterdam, where he also recorded this
album. On it, the pianist played, together with his trio, 15 pieces of George Gershwin. It is a pleasure to listen to this CD. It is special is that Balthaus plays the verses of some songs, which are often even more beautiful than the song itself.
Pianist Coen Molenaar also plays with a trio on his CD ‘Con Alma’ which is filled with his own compositions. He calls his ensemble: The New Conrad Miller Trio. It is a great album.
Finally, attention for pianist Thijs Cuppen. Again, a great album, with only
his own splendid compositions, thought up at home, judging by the
name of the album: ‘Homeground’.
In short: again 4 piano giants in jazz. I promise that you will hear four more
in two weeks, in part 3 of ‘pianists’.
