Folk magazine about the present and the past, from freak folk to minstrels. In a series of three programmes, we will highlight the alternative ‘folk’ heroic epic. No standard history lessons about kings and emperors, generals or war heroes, but stories about common, though exceptional thinkers, doers and daredevils, about creative persons and characters. We dive into the distant but also the more recent past, with songs telling about a person, their circumstances, their gains, their thoughts or their torments.
Last month, in the first programme, historic individuals and political thinkers were highlighted.
In part two, we focus on national heroes, outcasts, those who fought for justice but were treated unfair, people who stood up for freedom and who intentionally or unintentionally became the victims of a system. Their stories were musically captured by Andy Irvine, Allan Taylor, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Dick Gaughan, Jacques Brel, Jim Page, June Tabor and The Bad Shepherds.
