Roberto Inglez and his Orchestra “The Melody Maker”, Part 2

Who was ROBERTO INGLEZ ?
Now that we know who ROBERTO INGLEZ is after our show of last month (Part 1), we are able to pay more attention to the impressive period of over 8 years (1946-1954) which this orchestra conductor and pianist experienced. In the periods in which he was ‘free’ from the Savoy hotel in London, he went on tour to mostly Brazil and Portugal. In Brazil wages were payed which were unprecedented for that time, for big names from America as well. Meanwhile at least once a month a record was released and the sales figures were enormous. Although the records were for sale in the Netherlands, you had to search for it and the music magazines didn’t pay a lot of attention to it. Most records were sambas, biguines and mostly melodies of famous films, and popular dances also stood on the repertoire. Thanks to the elaborate information on CDs of almost all his material, which were released in England around the year 2000, a lot became known about Roberto. He married a Chilean and settled in Chili. Since then, for his main audience it became quieter around this special orchestra conductor who varnished the South American music in a ‘civilised’ manner.
