UKRAINE SONIC SPACE.
One year ago, 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. The invasion has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths on both sides. It has caused Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II. About 8 million Ukrainians were displaced within their country by late May, and more than 7.9 million fled the country by 3 January 2023.
The invasion has seen condemnation by many groups and nations. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the invasion and demanding a full withdrawal of Russian forces. The International Court of Justice ordered Russia to suspend military operations and the Council of Europe expelled Russia. Many countries imposed sanctions on Russia, and on its ally Belarus, affecting the economies of Russia and the world, and provided humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine2. Protests occurred around the world; those in Russia were met with mass arrests and increased media censorship, including a ban on the words “war” and “invasion”. Lots of companies have left Russia and Belarus in response to the invasion. The International Criminal Court has opened an investigation into crimes against humanity in Ukraine since 2013, including war crimes in the 2022 invasion.
Museum EICAS, European Institute for Contemporary Art and Science, asked the sonic artist Roland Kuit to create work for an exhibition to support Ukraine.
By diving into the sounds of this illegal war, recording them, edit them, or process them with the Kyma system, Roland managed to reshape these sounds into statements against this inhuman agression, into an Ukraine Sonic Space. A part of this sonic work is exhibited in this hour:
