Composer: Mark van Hoen
This episode presents works by Mark van Hoen.
Mark Van Hoen (1966, England) is an electronic music artist who has created music under his own name as well as Locust since 1981. The first time I encountered his work was in 1998 through the album “Playing With Time”. Van Hoen has a large oeuvre but “Playing with time” is often cited as a favorite by fans & critics. Female vocals are layered, cut up and glitched to create a warm and timeless electronic music. But it is definitely not the only good album.
In most of his music Van Hoen plays on rich textures, developing the music not by building up, but by morphing slightly, deepening in atmosphere, unsettling or soothing the listener.
A review on the BBC website stated “The music (…) seems to do nothing very much” while an article in The Sunday Times claimed that his music is “Soothing and disorienting at the same time”. I guess you have to listen for yourself. This episode is a collection of my personal favorites.
