On 20 April 2017, a small festival called ‘(h)ear meets the scream’ took place in the southern Limburg city of Heerlen. This is linked to Parallel, an initiative that aims at making visual art and music, pop and rock, respond to each other. The musical interpretation of and the closing act of the third edition of Parallel was entruseed to (h)ear – an initiative for sound art and experimental music from the Netherlands’ South. In this broadcast, we look at Amsterdam duo Glice. They were the closing act of the festival.
The set by Glice was recorded by our programme maker, Mike Kramer. Afterwards, we hear recordings of their release ‘Fleisch II’ with recordings of the performances at Rewire, Incubate, Manupalooza and Sneeuw & Ruis, all taking place in 2016.
About Glice:
Glice is the invention of Amsterdam musicians Ruben Braeken and Melle Kromhout, and kind of contradicts the songs based on pop trends of their other musical outputs, like Apneu, Fata ‘al Mustache’ Morgana and Katadreuffe.
With Glice, they dive into their love of abstract music and musically cheat on their genre. Using mainly lo-fi equipment, their approach is very focused but full of improvisations, free and with an ear for detail. Glice’s performances can be described as post-apocalyptic events. Or just as noise.
They strive for a complete exposure to all frequenties. Sonic identities change into sonic discomforts: Glice is music for the mind and organs alike. Right now, the gents of Glice are working on recordings with Hacke and the Picciotto. This album will be called ‘Cielo’ and will be released by Narrominded in the fall.
