Track 1.
Werner Kaegi (1926)
Vers d’autres jeux (1984)
– part three of Consolations –
Vers d’autres jeux is part three of Kaegi’s tape piece Consolations from 1984, which he made during his time at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht.
"…Here the concept is a ‘male voice simulated reciting a poem by the French poet and inventor Charles Cros’. The voice duplication was submitted to a transposition operation which lowered the voice far below its normal register giving it an ominous and threatening tone but did not effect the micro-structure of the duplication so it remains for the listener a comprehensible male voice…." (p.253, ICMC 86 Proceedings: from Midim Sound-Duplications and their Applications by Werner Kaegi, Jos Janssen, Paul Goodman, Utrecht, NL )
Werner Kaegi (1926) is a Swiss electronic music composer, musicologist and educator. During the 1960s, he promoted electronic music in his home country. From 1971 to 1987 he worked as a composer and researcher at the Institute of Sonology where he developed pioneering programs in the field of computer-generated music.
Track 2.

Wind (1991)
Solely the tape part of the composition "Wind for flutes and tape".
Frits Weiland, (1933) is a Dutch composer, filmmaker and writer. Track 3.
Johan van Kreij (1969)
4p (1998)
4p originally was a computer generated 8-channel composition using Lisp/ACToolbox to generate structure and CSound for sound synthesis. The piece is strongly inspired by Xenakis and Varése. 4p was made and premiered at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague.
Johan van Kreij (1969) is an improviser and composer of electronic music. He studied at Sonology (1994-1998) at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. He regularly performs both solo and with renowned musicians, such as cellist Francis Marie Uitti or choreographer Ted Stoffer. As a developer and engineer he has contributed to many projects in the fields of music, art and architecture. Since 2001 he teaches at the Institute of Sonology.
Track 4.
Paul Berg
Mandolin (1979)
The computer sound synthesis program SSP (designed by G.M. Koenig) was used to define 90 sound segments varying in length from 9 to 128 seconds. A basic idea was to distribute the segments in time using predetermined compositional rules. The outputs were mixed without any other electronic manipulation. It was made at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht.
Herbert
tells us that
music is
not the gesture but
the stress.
Maybe he is not
always right.
Paul Berg was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory and has lived in Utrecht since 1973. He has been associated with the Institute of Sonology for most of his life. He writes computer programs to assist in the composition of music and has composed a number of Albanian Torch Songs.
Track 5.
Gloribel Hernandez (1971-2010)
AlgúnLugar, CadaLugar, NingúnLugar (2004)
– excerpt –
Gloribel Hernandez composed AlgúnLugar, CadaLugar, NingúnLugar during her studies at the Institute of Sonology. This short excerpt containing field recordings and voices is meant as a teaser to introduce you to only one aspect of Gloribel Hernandez’ music and to invite you to listen to one of my next shows, which will be entirely dedicated to Gloribel’s music and sound art.
In 2010 singer, sound artist, multi-instrumentalist and composer/performer Gloribel Hernandez (Venezuela/NL) died much too young, at age 39 in Caracas. She had lived in The Hague for a long time but returned to Venezuela with her daughter Alba in 2008. Gloribel was a much loved and respected figure in the alternative art & music scene in The Netherlands.
Her rich kaleidoscope of talents covered experimental electronic music, sound art, performance art and experimental rock & pop.
