The Dutch band Wolverlei’s album Wind Tegen (headwind)
For the first time in Disc-Cover we highlight a Dutch release of folk music with Dutch lyrics. Different from most of the items in this range, this album is not entirely unknown but there is a good reason as to why we have chosen this masterpiece. Overall, Wolverlei’s album ‘Wind Tegen’ is considered to be one of the best Dutch folk music albums. Despite the vinyl revival we will need to do our utmost to make sure this album does not fade into oblivion. This Disc-Cover broadcast contributes a little bit.
The four band members Kees van der Poel, Frans Smulders, Rens van der Zalm and Marten Scheffer have created some songs that have entered the canon of Dutch folk music. For example the song 14-18, a re-translation by Frans Smulders of the worldwide famous song ‘No Man’s Land’ of Scottish Australian Eric Bogle. Even though the lyrics are in Dutch, this version is internationally considered to be one of the most beautiful covers of the song. ‘Wind Tegen’ was recorded – and appeared on vinyl – in 1980. It was immediately considered a masterpiece but until today the album was never newly released nor digitalised.
