Thelonious Monk Live in New York and Palo Alto.
This is our second broadcast dedicated to the music and person of Thelonious Monk. In 1957, Thelonious Monk got his Cabaret Card back and could play in New York clubs again. Partly through the mediation of Pannonica de Keunigswarter, Monk found accommodation at the Five Spot for a six-month engagement. Imagine six months of the Thelonious Monk Quartet playing with John Coltrane on saxophone, just around the corner if you live in New York. Almost impossible to imagine.
On Friday, 29 November, the Quartet also played at a Thanksgiving Concert at Carnegie Hall. That performance was recorded by Voice of America and was later released on CD.
