Chamber music by Schubert – String Quintet
Today in De Wandeling we will be performing chamber music by Franz Schubert again. The main part consists of the beautiful String Quintet in C, D956, but we will also hear two of Schubert’s songs, sung by tenor Fritz Wunderlich.
Schubert completed his String Quintet a few weeks before his death in 1828, but the first public performance was not until 1850. It is striking that the quintet was written for two cellos and not for two violas, which was more common at the time. It gives the work a deeper sound here and there.
