Producer and host Thijs Bonger continues his search through the life and works of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837). Today Part XVI.
During his quest through the life and work of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), programmemaker Thijs Bonger came across the name of Mauro Giuliani a striking number of times; the Italian virtuoso guitarist who fled the opera dictatorship of his own country and became famous in Europe. He settled in Vienna and became such close fiends with Hummel that they even wrote compositions together. If you look at how much guitar music was composed at the beginning of the 19th century – and rather good composers too – you wonder why the guitar is heard so relatively little on the international concert stages. In this ‘guitar’ episode of A Second Chance For Hummel you will of course hear music by Hummel himself but also by Beethoven, Weber, Paganini, Schubert, and a coproduction by Hummel and Giuliani.
