Radio Romantica

mon 24 aug 2020 12:00 hour
Composer: Johan Svendsen

Tchaikovsky’s large 6th symphony and music of Johan Svendsen in this episode of Radio Romantica.

Beginning with Tchaikovsky: his last symphony is often regarded as THE great Russian symphony. However, according to the influential critic Eduard Hanslick, there is no trace of Russian colour to be found in the piece. Since the premiere in 1893, the symphony has been called Western European for the reason that the Cossack dance and other peculiarities are lacking. This programme is concluded with ‘Romeo und Julia’, after the play of Shakespeare, of composer Johan Svendsen.
