On 9 December (20:00 – 22:00) , Alles ter nagedachtenis aan jou…’, our series about Russian music from the 20th century, focusses on Sergei Prokofiev's music for the film ‘Ivan the Terrible’.
In 1943, the composer travelled to Alma-Ata in Kazachstan, where film director Sergej Eisenstein stayed because of the war. Here they cooperated on the music for the epic film ‘Ivan the Terrible', a film that would later be awarded the Stalin prize. Eisenstein was deeply impressed by Prokofiev's way of working: “He works like a clock. A clock that neither gains nor loses time. Like a sniper, it hits the very heart of punctuality. And this way of working was made even more precise by his interaction with the film."
But to start the programme, Galina Vishnevskaya will sing six of the Twelve Russian Folk Songs from 1944.
