The Big Sound; Drummer Mel Lewis (1929-1990) gained great recognition as co-leader of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, which served as a model for many big bands later. However, he already had a long and fruitful career as a percussionist with the orchestras of Tex Beneke, Stan Kenton, and Gerry Mulligan, among others.
