Tchaikovsky’s (day)dreams

Tchaikovsky’s first symphony wasn’t composed without any effort. He had been appointed as a teached in Moscow in 1826, and thus had to produce something substantial. Naturally, it became a masterpiece, known to us as Winter Dreams. We effortlessly conjure up images of snowy landscapes and melancholy when we think of it. In 1878, Tchaikovsky enjoyed a delightful vacation at the dacha of his benefactress Nadeshda von Meck in Braïlov, Ukraine. The result was Souvenir d’un lieu cher for violin and piano. Renowned violinist James Ehnes is accompanied by Vladimir Ashkenazy. As an encore, you’ll hear the Danse Russe from Swan Lake.
