Joseph Rudolph “Philly Joe” Jones (1923-1985)
Tonight we will focus on the American drummer Philly Joe Jones, who lived from 1923 to 1985. During his career, he became the favorite drummer of, among others, Miles Davis, with whom he frequently played in the famous quintet alongside Red Garland on piano, John Coltrane on saxophone, Paul Chambers on bass, and Miles himself on trumpet.
In addition to his work for this quintet, he was also a bandleader from 1958 onwards. Tonight we will hear some of his solo albums as well as some sessions from the heyday of the Miles Davis Quintet.
