Composer: Duke Ellington

Duke Ellington (1899-1974) started out as a pianist in Washington D.C. and developed into one of the most important American orchestra leaders and composers of the last century.

In the mid-1920s, his first important compositions were written, and when his orchestra was given a permanent contract in New York’s Cotton Club, his great fame began. In 1931, he made his last recordings for a small record label.
