House of Hard Bop
Thirty years after his previous album Turkish Women at the Bath from 1967, drummer Pete ‘LaRoca’ Sims released Swing Time in 1997.
It’s his third studio recording under his own name, and his last.
In a strong seven man lineup we hear among others Dave Liebman on soprano, Jimmy Owens on trumpet and George Cables on piano. Noteworthy is the version of the standard Body and Soul. This is based on the medium tempo arrangement by John Coltrane – a recording he made in his Atlantic period (1959-1961). In that period Sims often played in the rhythm section of Coltranes quartet, recommended by Miles Davis.
Enjoy this nice hard, sometimes really hard, bop!
