LATA MANGESHKAR (part 6)
“THE MELODY QUEEN” of India, “SPECIALS” (5th part)

The AWARDS

In what will be the last episode for the time being of this six-part series about living legend LATA MANGESHKAR, we will focus on a few highlights from her 75-year career. We are aware that this won’t include all her pinnacles, for we would need dozens of episodes to cover these entirely.

The amount of awards that LATA received in her lifetime won’t fit in an average home. Where would you leave more than 150 ‘Golden Discs’ and 250 trophies? And what about all the ‘Best Female Playback Singer’ Awards for more than 10 movies? Not to mention the awards she received by the government of India: the ‘Padma Bhushan’ and the ‘Padma Vibushan’, which are also often given to famous classical musicians such as RAVI SHANKAR. But the most prestigious award the Indian government has awarded her, is the ‘Bhara Ratna’, which has been given to only five women. She also received multiple ‘Filmfare’ Awards, awarded by the monthly film magazine Filmfare. At some point she put a stop to this, to give young talents an opportunity to win the award as well. And then we have different universities from various Indian provinces, and even abroad, which have appointed her as ‘Doctor of Letters’. Additionally, she made it into the Guinness Book of World Records twice, and was awarded ‘Best Playback Singer of the Millennium’ and many other awards followed. Furthermore, was she the only Indian artist that received a ‘Platina Disc’ in London by EMI.

Regarding her music, we will play some remarkable songs from famous movies from 1954 up to and including 2014. At 83 years old, she sang in the very modern and controversial movie ‘Dunno Y2’. It’s still hard to imagine that this movie was produced in India.
