Composers: Bernard Grijpstra | Lori Napoleon
#260. Independent sound art, radiophonic projects and other audio non-visual misunderstandings and findings. Telegraph Music by Antenes – Lori Napoleon -.
We asked Lori Napoleon to make a radiopiece on a subject she was working on which is the radio telegraph. Known for her inventive soundscapes and eclectic DJ sets, New York-based DJ, producer and electronic artist Antenes – Lori Napoleon- also operates a studio-turned-laboratory of self-made sequencers and modular synthesizers built from vintage telephone equipment. Telegraph Music explores the intertwined histories of electronic music and telecommunications by using a repurposed switchboard modular setup and cooperate with Dutch operator Bernard Grijpstra, talking and practicing at Worm.
Other ingredients of the piece;
The first bit is a previous live performance, then you hear Morse Code and a collage of sounds from my research, the sources are from: Radio-Holland Historical Material Foundation, Re:Vive (who commissioned the original project), recordings of myself and Dutch operator Bernard Grijpstra (key, Buchla and Phenol synths), vintage operator training video by US Army, excerpts from live performance in The Hague (ReWire), one final track of mine (from LIES).
