Recently, renowned Brussels label Sub Rosa released a compilation album of electronic composer on vinyl and a CD, with two extra compositions on it. This broadcast is entirely dedicated to this album.
Bülent Arel was a composer of contemporary and electronic music. He studied composition at the Ankara Conservatoir and sound technique in Paris. In 1959, he was invited to come work at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. In 1962, he worked with Edgard Varèse on the electronic parts of Varèse Deserts. He also designed the electronic music lab at Yale University and started a electronic music programme for the State University of New York at Stony Brook op, where he taught from 1971 up to his retirement in 1989. He invented the ‘splicing tape dispenser’ and other devises for tape manipulation. He was a pioneer of loop techniques..
On Sub Rosa’s website, this can be found: “Bülent Arel’s work occupies a special place in the history of electronic music because one thing is certain: Arel’s work is still fresh, groundbreaking, and it seems always to look out for the next adventure in sound.”
Long crossfades. Enjoy listening!
