English composer Henry Lawes was born in the late 16th century and was part of the generation of composers of the post-Elizabeth period.
He was probably a pupil of the great Coperario and played in the King’s Musick in 1626. When the monarchy fell, Henry Lawes became music teacher at the aristocracy and became very active in the London music scene.
Lawes was one of the most productive composers of his time: he created more than 350 songs.
Despite Henry Lawes’ fame, he was overshadowed by his younger brother William, who died at a young age.
In Henry Lawes’ time, not only the lute and the virginal were used by singers to accompany themselves, but also the viola da gamba.
