Episode 7: music by the Conamus, WO and NPI.
World Music NL! is a series of broadcasts about the variety of musical genres made in the Netherlands that are considered part of the large territory known as world music.
Since the eighties, world music has become the collective term for folk music (or traditional music), non-western classical music, non-western pop music, and combinations of those genres.
In the Netherlands, a number of unique collections have been built up, consisting of recordings of non-western and multicultural music. They are part of the collections of various semi-public institutions and of the collections of unions and the general public. From the nineties onwards, most groups have begun to make their own CDs. Over the years, music organisations have made compilation CDs that are not meant for trade.
In this episode, the compilation CD Dutch World 2003, a promotional album meant for foreign radio stations compiled by Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (Radio Netherlands Worldwide) in collaboration with Conamus and Nederlands Pop Instituut (NPI).
The Conamus foundation (known since 1 March 2006 as Stichting Buma Cultuur (Buma Culture Foundation)), is an organization that focuses on supporting and promoting Dutch music.
Buma Cultuur organizes annual events like the Amsterdam Dance Event, the Noorderslag Festival the Dag van de Nederlandse jazz (Day of Dutch Jazz) and Muzikantendag (Musicians Day). Additionally, people take part in international music conferences in order to promote the export of Dutch music.
In the early sixties, Radio Netherlands Worldwide started a long tradition of recording and promoting jazz music and folkloristic music for the language editors, including recordings of Surinamese and Antillean bands for the Caribbean Department. Recordings of big orchestras and festivals were also made, and of small orchestras and ensembles, and various popular orchestras. These recordings were made available for foreign stations via the transcription service and later the music department.
The Nationaal Pop Instituut (NPI) was an organization that focused on the development and the quality of Dutch pop music. On 1 January 2008, the NPI became part of Muziek Centrum Nederland (Music Centre Netherlands, MCN). When the MCN was dissolved, the NPI gave a large part of its extensive archives to the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (Dutch Insitute for Picture and Sound). Over the years, the NPI released some compilation albums containing not only pop music, but also world music made in the Netherlands.
