An old LP cover dug out from the Concertzender archives.
Sis Kebabi – Turkish Ensemble “Istanbul” led by Attila Sezimbel LP.
Taking a nice breather in lovely Maastricht (the Netherlands). That is always pleasant but especially when there is a big flea market at the grote marktwhere you find a stall with a case full of LP’s with exotic covers. A nice couple behind the stall calls out: "one Euro a piece or fifteen for the whole case". I couldn’t take the whole case because that would mean a hernia but I settled with a nice collection of Egyptian and Lebanese jewels, including this curious LP of the Turkish ensemble “Istanbul” led by Attila Sezimbel. The record is called “Sis Kebabi” and was probably released in the seventies under Goldstar/Basart Records International. The latter is quite special because this label produced mainly Dutch music, but also a lot of relax music for elevators. At the back of the cover of “Sis Kebabi” we find advertising for the following warm records: Fausto Papetti, Harry Mooten, Nini Rosso, Herbert Joeks, Annie MG Schmidt, Tom Erich plays Ever Greens, Willy Derby and Groeten Uit Holland by Draaiorgel De Klok.
The lovely lady on the front of “Sis Kebabi” however, made my oriental hearth beat faster. A nicely shaped belly dancer with a sultry expression.
Further information about the company Attila Sezimbel can’t be found. A search on the internet only results in many delicious Turkish recipes. To make clear “Sis Kebabi” is a nice Turkish dish.
The LP is full of short traditional songs. The song "Üskudar" will sound familiar to people over 40. This song was a hit under the name of "Turkey Turkey" from the Dizzy Mans Band in 1976.
The original version of the world famous song “Mustafa” is also on the LP. I know this song by Babacar Faye’s CD “Sing Sing” as “Ya Moustapha” but my better half gets the single “Milord” by Corry Brokken out of her single case, with on the b-side the oriental clogs version namend “Mustapha”.
In addition you will hear the CD: Caravanserai; Istanbul Oriental Ensemble & Burhan Ocal.
