1957 was a top year for Russia during the Cold War period with the succesful launch of the first Sputnik satellite, but there was also competition in the arts as well as in the space race.
The year saw many performances by American musicians in Russia and in 1958 the International Tsjaikovski-concours was won by the American Van Cliburn (1934-2013), the first classical musician to get a ticker tape parade in New York.
