Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.

Tsjaikovsky’s 1st symphony, Sérénade mélancolique, and Mélodie from Souvenir d’un lieu cher

Pamper yourself with Tchaikovsky’s fantastic music in the next hour. The first 45 minutes of this episode are dedicated to the warm sounds of the Grand Master’s first symphony; The four parts have beautiful titles like Dreaming of a journey through the snow or Abandoned landscape, land of mist. We’ll listen to the recording by Oslo’s Philharmonic Orchestra from the eighties; they were conducted by the young Mariss Jansons during this time. Hij made this local orchestra into a world-class ensemble. The recordings of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies for the label ‘Chandos’ are still legendary. We’ll also listen to the Sérénade mélancolique and a part from Souvenir d’un lieu cher, which are both performed by world-class violinist James Ehnes. Vladimir Askenazy accompanies him, either as a pianist or as conductor of the Sydney Symphony.
