Acoustic Roots

mon 29 mar 2021 18:00 hour

In our ‘living room’, Karin van den Boogaert and Carolien Cleiren receive all manner of World Music performers.

Encore, a party with The Lasses in Acoustic Roots.

We’ll always feel connected with all of the performers who’ve made an appearance in Acoustic Roots. We always become family; that’s how it feels being part of Acoustic Roots.

The recording sessions are always fun. We are connected with our passion for music. When the session is over, and we say goodbye, we hope we’d see each other again. We often keep in touch and celebrate good news, a new CD, for example. We keep supporting them and cheer when things go well.

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan, and you can only brace yourself because there are no words for what happened…

Luckily we recently heard some good news from Sophie: ‘Margot from The Lasses has had a rough couple of months; in late October 2020, she got diagnosed with cancer. This week we heard she reacted positively to chemotherapy and had a successful operation.’

She still is not fully recovered, and it will take some time before she does, but we are very happy for Margot and her loved ones. We wanted to celebrate the good news by repeating the episode featuring The Lasses. We hope they’ll come by when this is all over!

Sophie Janna and Margot Merah met during music sessions in the Amsterdam Irish pub ‘Mulligans’. Someone proposed they should sing together during a jam. It turned out their voices sounded very good together, and from that moment they became ‘The Lasses’. They accompany themselves on guitar, bodhran (Irish hand-held drum) and sometimes on harmonica. They have an enormous amount of songs. Stories about love, death, and other things about life are performed with humour, musicality and without pretence. The Irish and American folk traditions clearly influenced them in their song choices and their own work.

The Lasses cover songs from the Celtic-British and American oeuvre, but they also perform their own songs. The self-titled debut and the second album, ‘Daughters, ‘ only feature covers from other songs. Their third album features live recordings, recorded in the Parel van Zuilen in Utrecht.

The Lasses didn’t sit around. Click here for their latest CD-projects.
