The programme The Last Century is going to be covering over the next few months the influence of Beethoven on 20th century composers
Pretty well everyone knows that this year is the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. The Last Century will also be covering the birthday boy and in particular the influence he has had on 20th century ( and 21st century ) composers. The first episode is on Thursday 13th February.
In this programme we’re playing ‘Con Brio’ by Jörg Widmann, which was written at the request of the Beierse Omroep Orchestra as a ‘reflection’ on the 7th and 8th symphonies. The programme also includes the third String quartet by Alfred Schnittke and the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Beethoven by Max Reger .
In the weeks thereafter there will be works by among others John Adams, Alberto Ginastera, Brett Dean and György Kurtág.
